Interview conducted by:

Lynn Fosse, Senior Editor, CEOCFO Magazine, Published – April 27, 2015

CEOCFO: Mr. Spaggiari, you have been with the company for fifteen years as CEO, would you tell us the focus at Expert System today?

Mr. Spaggiari: In the early years of Expert System, the convergence of linguistics and technology was something only being talked about in research institutions or academia—today, it’s a reality. We’re providing an ever-increasing number of applications in multiple languages to many of the largest and most admired companies and government agencies throughout Europe, the Americas and the Middle East. Our focus continues to be on developing and delivering new and enhanced capabilities for business and government, providing outstanding service to our customers and expanding our global presence and infrastructure.

CEOCFO: What does the product do?

Mr. Spaggiari: Imagine what it would be like if you read everything and knew exactly where everything was, who did what, and how everything happened. That's what Expert System technology can do for you: it discovers what is contained in content, understanding the meaning and context. It enriches the content with metadata, automatically organizing and structuring it so that it may be transparently uploaded into other systems.

Cogito was developed to address a diverse range of information management challenges. It supports tools that use all the information available, in nearly any format, inside or outside the organization. By relying on deep semantic analysis and a rich semantic network, Cogito provides enterprise data with context. It supports organizational efforts to tackle the unstructured Big Data challenge. It enables the integration of unstructured information with structured data, turning the co-mingled outcome into usable knowledge.

CEOCFO: How are you able to work with the unstructured data?

Mr. Spaggiari: We tell our customers to never stop expecting more from their unstructured data. Access to it has little value if it is not accurately and effectively processed. Powerful automatic disambiguation, tagging and classification enabled by Cogito dramatically improve your ability to process and leverage unstructured content. What we're able to do with text can be plugged directly into your existing assets and analytics to help you deliver a complete picture: identify virtually any entity and sentiment, expose web services or produce XML, RDF and other formats to integrate directly into your existing tools and platforms.

CEOCFO: Would you tell us about being part of the Google partner program?

Mr. Spaggiari: This collaboration allows us to combine our solutions for accessing unstructured information and managing big data with the power of the Google Cloud Platform. This is a tremendous opportunity for extending the benefits of semantic intelligence to the strategic analysis of any type of data via the Google ecosystem. For example with big query, which is service that is a big database that you can use and we can combine with the big query service with the Cogito ability to extract and analyze the content of this big database so you can combine the two tools.

CEOCFO: Is there much competition?

Mr. Spaggiari: Where there is information, there is also software trying to make sense of it, and there is a lot of competition in the realm of approaching an understanding of content, but mostly through technologies that utilize keyword matching or frequency, or statistical-based approaches. But those technologies simply do not understand language. A technology that analyzes unstructured text and establishes connections between not just words, but more importantly, concepts, is key for competing today, and that’s where our technology is truly unique.

CEOCFO: You have done well with your international expansion in the past year. What is the plan going forward?

Mr. Spaggiari: We are committed to growth. In the past year, we’ve seen growth on all fronts. In the US where we now have three offices (Washington, D.C., Chicago, and Palo Alto), we reported an 82% increase in orders in 2014. In Europe, we recently opened a new office in the UK and have expanded into the Latin America market with the acquisition of a Spanish company. We will continue to expand our technology footprint through integrations with leading technologies and partners in line with the growing needs of our customers.

CEOCFO: Do you have the funding necessary or will you be seeking additional funding or investors?

Mr. Spaggiari: So far we have raised enough for our organic growth and current projects, both in US and Europe. We will see what the future brings.

CEOCFO: Why pay attention to Expert System?

Mr. Spaggiari: In Cogito, we believe that we have developed something truly unique. What started out as a niche market is becoming more mainstream, and we are seeing a lot of growth and maturity today. Analysis of communications—between people, between devices, of large data sets—contain language. Language has real power, the power of expression, the power of influence, and the power of knowledge. Language, and the ability to understand meaning and context will only become more and more important to the strategic analysis of any type of data.

“Never stop expecting more from your unstructured data. A technology that analyzes unstructured text and establishes connections between not just words, but more importantly, concepts is the key to compete on the market today.”
