Interview conducted by: Lynn Fosse, Senior Editor, CEOCFO Magazine, Published – April 15, 2013

CEOCFO: Mr. Islam, on your website indicates “Outstanding Performance…Always”. What do you do at Zantech IT Services, and how is it outstanding?

Mr. Islam: We are an 8(a) certified minority owned company, founded in 2007, provides IT solutions and program support to several government agencies. I am the company’s President & CEO. Upholding our motto “Outstanding Performance …Always” is very important to me. I feel that a business is based upon relationships that we form everyday. By relationships I mean governmental agencies, contracting officers, and teaming partners. I have instilled in my staff that it does not matter who we are working with, they have to go above and beyond what is the expected of them every time. This belief has helped us to grow and as a result we have received several awards. For example, Inc. magazine recognized us as number 21 in the nation and number 1 in the government services sector and number 1 in Virginia and Washington DC metro area. So, what makes us outstanding is our dedication to our customers.

CEOCFO: How did you do it?

Mr. Islam: First of all, I have a very experienced management team. Also, the federal government has a very disciplined process, so we have instituted an excellent business development pipeline tracking process. As a small company it is essential to understand the competitive bidding process. Therefore, we have a business development meeting every week to discuss our progress and strategize for our future, keeping in mind the needs of our customers. As you know, the Federal IT market is very tough right now. We always provide our customers the best solution with a very competitive price.

CEOCFO: How do you know what is best? How do you research and decide what direction you need to go and what you are offering as a solution?

Mr. Islam: First of all, there is no hard and fast rule to determine what is best. Every opportunity is considered. My staff and I do our research to determine if we want to proceed and if so, what kind of solutions are we able to provide to the customer. I have a very experienced management team that puts together a business case for each opportunity, and then we decide which direction to go in.

CEOCFO: I know who you are doing projects for; but is there a thread in the projects?

Mr. Islam: As an example, for NASA we provide science, engineering and IT support services. We have recently launched a website named Space Operations and Learning Center, SOLC, http://solc.gsfc.nasa.gov/index.html. It is basically designed for middle and high school students to play games with science and technology, so that they can develop an interest in space, science and engineering. It is important for our future generations to develop an interest in math and science. That is because we are leaders in space, and things like the Space Operations Learning Center website help us as a community. Another example of what we are doing in the Hampton Roads area here in Virginia with the Army. We are launching a mobile application for the Army. The contract is Army training information. Our goal is to make sure that people are online on the ground. They are defending our country. They can take their training on the Smartphone. We have launched a mobile application so that they can enter their information online, they can check their grades, and they can get their training information. It has been very helpful for them to see everything through a Smartphone.

CEOCFO: Are these ideas that you come up with? Are you implementing ideas that have been presented to you by the agency?

Mr. Islam: All Zantech employees work very closely to our customers. Therefore, the ideas are developed jointly. In general, our team finds solutions that would feasible to our customers and their needs. All the while keeping in mind to increase their efficiency and reduce their cost.

CEOCFO: Do you have any concerns about sequestration?

Mr. Islam: That is a very good question. Anywhere you go in the Washington DC area –everyone is talking about it. My concern with sequestration is that it will be hard on small businesses who rely on the Federal contracts. I feel that we are going to have to think out of the box and try to find ways in which we can provide more services to the customer at a reduced cost. It will be challenging but let us hope for the best and see what happens.

CEOCFO: Would you tell us a little more about what you did in Afghanistan?

Mr. Islam: Our employees have been working with the Department of Defense to create compressed natural gas CNG stations. Northern area of Afghanistan is rich natural gas and therefore it is not feasible to import oil into the country. We are helping them to tap into the resource and construct CNG stations throughout the country.

CEOCFO: What is ahead for you? Will there be changes in strategy?

Mr. Islam: I would like to grow this company exponentially. I believe that our current strategy is working well for Zantech. We will continue to provide compelling technical solutions to our customers at a very competitive price.

CEOCFO: Are you finding it difficult to find the technical people to work for you that, one; have the expertise, and two; understand your concept and philosophy?

Mr. Islam: Hiring the right people is very important for me. It is no doubt very difficult to hire someone that has the technical experience and a similar philosophy. However, I must say that we have been lucky in this aspect. I have an exceptional Human Resource Team that makes this process very easy.

CEOCFO: Why should investors and people in the business community be paying attention to Zantech?

Mr. Islam: There are several reasons why the investors and the business community should pay close attention to us. First of all, I started this company in 2007, and with the right management team and business development strategies we have grown to over $22 million within 5 years. Inc. magazine rated us as one of the fastest growing companies in the nation. We always put our customer first and as a result we have received outstanding performance reports from them. We have received several awards and recognitions by the business community. I am very passionate, focused and fully committed to Zantech. Investors should see us as evolving quickly and should want to be a part of our growth.

CEOCFO: What surprised you most as you developed the company?

Mr. Islam: That is a very good question. As I mentioned earlier, it has been a great challenge to grow Zantech in this tough economy. But the biggest surprise was to see the dedication of my staff to the success of Zantech. It is very easy to find people who have technical expertise but to find people who are sincere, hard working, loyal, and determined to make this company a success is rare.
