Interview conducted by: Lynn Fosse, Senior Editor,
CEOCFO Magazine, Published – June 16, 2014 CEOCFO: Mr. Kutemperor, Scientel Information Technology is “the Big Data, big solutions company.” How so? Mr. Kutemperor: Scientel provides complete, single-source, Big Data system solutions, including hardware, database management systems software, and applications based on a highly-advanced, user-friendly, “NoSQL” (pronounced “NoSEQUEL”; also sometimes called “Not SQL”) language structure and flexible data models that can scale cost-effectively to very large configurations for all Big Data requirements.
Mr. Kutemperor: The first item that we need to think about when we are looking at Big Data is the fact that at least 80% of today’s data is unstructured. And, typical business data that we all are used to dealing with—which is structured data—is only 20% of Big Data. We are utilizing new technologies that are allowing us to generate data exponentially, meaning that we are generating in one day more data than we used to generate in about ten years in the past. The other item of importance is the fact that there is a great deal of business intelligence in the form of unstructured information that is coming to us through Big Data that we are not recognizing, and which is not arriving through the typical business data channels. Interestingly, the structured typical part of business data is also increasing. For example, we never used to collect the time of an order as to exactly what time a customer placed the order and if we did, it was not of much relevance. A large retailer found out that they were selling more iPhones between 5 and 9 p.m., so they were able to shift their employee times, according to the time of the order, rather than just take orders. There is a huge amount of data that we are now receiving through secondary sources other than the primary source itself. The thing that people and businesses need to do these days is to be able to collect all of the Big Data and be able to manage it in all its forms. Big Data is also arriving in what is called high velocity, volume, variety, and variability. All of our contents—including standard business and scientific data--today are digitized. Our movies, textbooks and pictures are all digital, and they come into our systems not through the standard data channels. They just come through other sources like emails, PDF files, electronic books, pictures, and even movies are digital these days. That is the way data is accumulating these days, and we provide advanced NoSQL-based solutions to manage it properly.
CEOCFO: What types of companies are using your services? Mr. Kutemperor: The types of organizations that used to manage very large data systems were big users like NASA and very large corporations that had extremely large amounts of data. That type of environment is changing, or has changed already. In other words, it used to be a time where large companies used computers and small companies never used computers. All of us use computers these days, so similarly Big Data is something to be analyzed, collected and properly organized by smaller companies because there is a great deal of business intelligence that is now accessible to virtually anyone. Small Big Data solutions are required even at the low end.
CEOCFO: How are you reaching potential customers? Mr. Kutemperor: We are trying to aggressively find channel partners that are good candidates for partnering with us to be able to efficiently communicate and deliver the Big Data message. Primarily, we focus on providing the hardware configured with the database management software solutions. Partner companies would typically install and manage these systems and at the same time, customize the end user applications such as business intelligence, visual analytics and so forth.
CEOCFO: What makes a company a good candidate for you to partner with? Mr. Kutemperor: The ideal partner companies are companies that are providing what we call Big Data and end user solutions; companies that are developing applications for analytics as well as ones that are system integrators. For example, visual query is a program that can provide two or three answers to questions in one display; where the size of a chart could show one proportion of the data, and the color of the chart could show another proportion. In other words, the profit scenario can be in the coordinated color, where the sales amount can be coded in the chart size. Thus by looking at a color chart, you can figure out who is more profitable and who is selling the most. Visual analytics is replacing what we used to do in terms of multiple queries. One visual analytics chart can replace two or three queries in a single display. There are companies that are providing analytics solutions by preparing the data and organizing it in a database. Such system integrators and solution providers are our best partners.
CEOCFO: How do they find you and how do you find them? Mr. Kutemperor: We are advertising and networking and all of our general information is available at our website, which is www.scientel.com. There is an application on there for resellers to apply, and we also advertise. We are also at shows. Just this last month, we had a presentation at the Enterprise Search Summit in New York, and we are going to be at the NoSQL NOW conference in San Jose in August. We speak at many of these conferences and promote our technologies there. Conferences are a good place for companies to learn about and understand our Big Data technology and capabilities, as well as visit our booth and meet with us directly.
CEOCFO: You were recognized recently by CIOReview magazine as one of the Big Data 100. What is it about Scientel that is impressing the right people? Mr. Kutemperor: For example, the Corp! Magazine DiSciTech Award that we won this year was a sequel to last year’s winning. Last year we won the award for releasing our LDWA (Large Data Warehouse Appliance) infrastructure hardware that is capable of processing a very large number of transactions for a very large number of customers. This year we won the award for releasing the first and only Enterprise Content Management and Search system developed under a NoSQL DB. NoSQL DB for Big Data is much more efficient than typical SQL databases; so that was what the award was for. As far as CIOReview is concerned, they were looking at the most promising Big Data 100 companies, and we were selected in that 100 category out of thousands considered for providing a comprehensive Big Data solution. According to CIOReview, we were the most promising company in the infrastructure category for Big Data.
CEOCFO: I know you have a number of different products. Tell us a little bit about the different items that you offer today. Mr. Kutemperor: One of the main items that we offer today in addition to our NoSQL Database Management System and the LDWA hardware series is our ECMS (Enterprise Content Management & Search) solution. Content management is an important item for all organizations to look at because content is spreading into all our enterprises. There is a great deal of hidden intelligence in all of the content that we are receiving through all sorts of means into our enterprises. Let me illustrate the value and importance of Content Management with an ordinary everyday example about the operator’s manual for a copier that we all utilize in our offices. We usually get one CD of the user’s manual for the whole office, where we may have more than 100 users. How are we going to manage and share it? How do we make sure that it is not lost and that all who need to have it can have access to it? With ECMS, we are able to move the contents of that CD into our ECMS system, and all 100+ people can access that all at the same time. They can also do searches from within what we call textual documents – PDFs, Microsoft documents mostly are all textual documents, whereas clips, videos and pictures are not. By being able to search inside the textual document, we can actually locate what we are looking for and get to the right page that we want to read. Content management is a very valuable tool for all of us, and it is a very helpful tool for all organizations, whether it is non-profit or profit, commercial, corporate, scientific, medical, city government, small businesses or large enterprises. Everybody needs it and now can have it cost-effectively. The basic offering that we can start with is a very small appliance that is turnkey and virtually maintenance free. It is easily installed into the network and pretty much goes to work without having to do too much in the way of setup. For larger organizations, we offer appliances that can scale to very large configurations, that can store very large numbers of documents efficiently, and that are able to locate these documents rapidly.
CEOCFO: Have people been actively looking for better tools or is it more that they will be happy to know it exists? Mr. Kutemperor: Some of the companies are getting more and more educated about what is happening in the data landscape, and those that are aware of it are looking for efficient tools. Others are going to have to be educated, so we do both. We do have some educational webinars, and we demonstrate the products and promote the products to end users as well as resellers at most of the conferences.
CEOCFO: How long has the product been available? Mr. Kutemperor: The enterprise level Content Management solution was introduced last year, and our company has been a NoSQL performer for quite a long time. Our Gensonix® NoSQL DBMS was actually introduced in the 90s, and in 2003 we were one of the first companies to deliver an enterprise version of our ERP system specialized for the supply chain market. That product has been in the market for over ten years now.
CEOCFO: How is business these days? Mr. Kutemperor: Now, we are specializing in true Big Data solutions that have absolute, unique technological advantages that allow us to approach the projected Trillion-dollar Big Data market over the next decade. According to an AdWeek article, Big Data added $156 Billion to the US economy last year; this data was compiled by surveying more than 600 companies including Google, Cheetahmail, USPS, ESPN, etc.
CEOCFO: What is your geographic reach today? Mr. Kutemperor: Currently we are supporting customers throughout North America; that is, the USA and Canada. We do have some clients who take advantage of our technology and make it available in the Far East as well as the Asian continent, and we are in the process of raising capital so we can expand there as well as globally.
CEOCFO: Our readers are in the business and investment community with many high-end executives. Make the case – why does Scientel Information Technology stand out? Mr. Kutemperor: It stands out because first of all, Scientel was one of the first companies to market NoSQL-based systems technology. We noticed vulnerabilities and limitations of the SQL database, and these conclusions became fairly well established worldwide in the last decade. We pushed our technology to promote the fact that ultimately in the Big Data arena, SQL technologies are not going to suffice, and we will be needing new technologies like NoSQL. Specifically how Scientel is different technologically is in two ways. One, its storage mechanisms are uniquely efficient, in both software and hardware. Therefore, Scientel systems can store more data more cost-effectively than all other SQL and NoSQL competitors. Secondly, Scientel can scale to very large systems so that customers will not experience “designed-in obsolescence”, and they can keep expanding their hardware without having to replace it. We also promote a new technology called Massively Parallel Processing where many servers act effectively in parallel, providing very fast and very highly efficient solutions. These factors are what makes the Scientel true difference and for Big Data what makes Scientel attractive to customers.
Every day
that goes by, all analytical organizations are concluding that Big Data is
increasing by leaps and bounds and predicting that systems of today will not
be able to keep up with upcoming demands. So we need systems that are highly
efficient as well as ones that can grow to large configurations, to be able
to store and manage Big Data of any size. In this regard, Scientel clearly
stands out as a leader. We are proud to be one of the few companies in the
world with the advanced technical capabilities required to take advantage of
the projected Trillion-dollar Big Data market, which has added $156 Billion
to the US economy last year. We are seeking funding and wish to position
with the right investor and Big Data partners in order to address this
market properly. Additionally, we are a privately held company, which makes
the company stand out as an attractive target for the investment community. |
