CALGARY, Dec. 13 /CNW/ - AeroMechanical Services Ltd. (AMA - TSX Venture), ("AMS") announces that the company was recently awarded a research grant of approximately $180,000 to fund the development of enhanced weather observation equipment for use on commercial passenger aircraft. This funding comes from the Search and Rescue New Initiatives Fund and is administered by Environment Canada.

Meteorological services around the world have begun using aircraft based weather observations (Aircraft Meteorological Data Relay or AMDAR) to supplement "upper air" weather data gathered by radiosondes or weather balloons. These aircraft passively collect weather data while in flight and transmit the data to meteorological services. MetProbe is designed to enhance and improve the weather data captured while in flight and features a dedicated temperature probe, a relative humidity probe and enhanced measurement of wind speed and wind direction using MEMS based inertial reference system. The AMS tools (afirs and UpTime(TM)) have proven their capacity to reliably transmit data from aircraft anywhere on the planet.

The quantity of weather data available in large parts of Canada and the world is limited due to the limitations to the aircraft fleet and data transmission capabilities.

The additional sensing potential coupled with afirs data transmission capability could enhance weather forecasting in Canada and around the world. Europe is especially interested in the weather in eastern and northern Canada because it only takes a few days for Canadian weather systems in these regions to become European weather systems. Weather conditions in northern Canada can also have a profound impact on southern Canada. AMS has worked with Environment Canada on various AMDAR related projects since 2002.

It is anticipated that the outcome from the MetProbe project will be reduced SAR events due to unanticipated weather and improved safety for rescuers.
