Meteorological services around the world have begun using aircraft based
weather observations (Aircraft Meteorological Data Relay or AMDAR) to
supplement "upper air" weather data gathered by radiosondes
or weather balloons. These aircraft passively collect weather data while in
flight and transmit the data to meteorological services. MetProbe
is designed to enhance and improve the weather data
captured while in flight and features a dedicated temperature probe, a relative
humidity probe and enhanced measurement of wind speed and wind direction using
MEMS based inertial reference system. The AMS tools (afirs
and UpTime(TM)) have proven their capacity to reliably transmit data from aircraft anywhere on the
planet.

It is anticipated that the outcome from the MetProbe project will be reduced SAR events due to
unanticipated weather and improved safety for rescuers.
