T.A. Sciences is a consumer health and wellness company dedicated to discovering and creating groundbreaking products to enhance and extend the human Healthspan through Telomerase Activation. Based on the science of telomere biology, the company is solely focused on research-based solutions to rejuvenating the aging process on a cellular level.

Targeting telomeres, the protective caps at the end of all chromosomes that are critical to healthy cell function, T.A. Sciences’ products activate an enzyme that can slow down and possibly reverse age- and lifestyle-related telomere shortening. Short telomeres can cause mutations and degradations to chromosomes leading to loss of cell functionality. The company’s inaugural product, TA-65 is the only proven product focused on the telomerase activation market.

Founded in 2002, T.A. Sciences is headquartered in New York City.

First, T.A. Sciences founder Noel Patton secured exclusive worldwide rights to Telomerase Activation technology from a leading California biotech company. Then after 5 years of development and safety testing, he introduced TA-65 to provide the public with the benefits of groundbreaking Telomerase Activation technology.

Interview conducted by: Lynn Fosse, Senior Editor, CEOCFO Magazine, Published – September 16, 2013

CEOCFO: Mr. Patton, what was the vision when you founded T.A. Sciences?

Mr. Patton: When I turned fifty, I became concerned about my own aging. I noticed the deterioration starting and did not like it, so initially I was interested in anti-aging medicine strictly for myself. In the process of that, I discovered telomere biology and an enzyme called telomerase that has the capacity to make cells young again and to live longer. I invested in a company that had discovered a molecule that we call TA-65, which turns on a dormant gene and activates an enzyme called telomerase. This molecule makes cells live longer by being able to divide more times. Telomerase makes the cell actually younger. Scientifically, this is described as reverting to a younger phenotype. We spent the first five years on research, development, and safety testing before introducing our product in 2000. TA-65 is a pill sold as a nutritional supplement.

So to specifically answer your question, I got interested in the science of Telomere Biology to save my own skin as an aging human, and it turned out to be a business opportunity. I had sold my prior business, which had nothing to do with biotech, medicine, or science. I was a manufacturer of electric fans and electric heaters; I was an appliance manufacturer using old technology. That is how I got into this, and we have been building up the business since then. Now, I am happy to say that it has become successful and profitable, and the scientific and medical community has accepted TA-65 as an important product based on real groundbreaking science.

CEOCFO: What is actually happening with the science and how is the enzyme working in the body?

Mr. Patton: Every cell in our body has to keep dividing- some less so than others- in order to replenish dead cells as we age. Those cells have to be replaced, so cells are dividing millions and maybe even billions of times a day because we have a hundred trillion cells in our body. Every time a cell divides, the ends of our chromosomes, which are called telomeres, get shorter. Telomeres are likened to the plastic tips at the ends of shoelaces. If the shoelace is a chromosome, the plastic tips are the telomeres. They are there to protect the integrity of the genes that are on our chromosomes. We have twenty-three pairs of chromosomes that are in every cell. These telomeres at the end of every cell get shorter every time the cell divides, which means they are getting shorter all the time. As we age they get shorter and shorter, and when they get too short the cell can no longer divide and it becomes useless (senescent) and dies. What TA-65 does is activate an enzyme that is made inside the cell, and that enzyme, which is telomerase, does two things. First, it adds DNA to the ends of the telomeres, making them longer and allowing the cell to divide more times and live longer. Secondly, the lengthened telomeres cause gene expression to change and the cell is rejuvenated to a younger phenotype, which means it acts like a younger cell.

CEOCFO: How is this product sold?

Mr. Patton: TA-65 is sold as a nutritional supplement, in pill form, through doctors we have licensed and tested to ensure that they understand at least the basics of Telomere Biology and what our product does. We have about eight hundred licensed doctors in the United States so far. It can also be purchased on the internet from those doctors.

CEOCFO: Why did you make the decision to distribute your product in that manner?

Mr. Patton: We encourage anyone who is considering a new health treatment to talk to their doctor before taking anything and TA-65 is no exception. We also believe that this science needs to be explained to the average consumer. Most people reading this article probably will not have heard of telomeres or telomerase, but some will. The proper way to educate the person is for them to talk to somebody they trust. We think a doctor is the best person to explain the technology and how activating the enzyme telomerase can reset the aging clock in our cells.

CEOCFO: When you are talking with doctors or anyone, when is the “aha” moment where they understand it is real?

Mr. Patton: At first there was a lot of skepticism about this new science, but that changed in 2009 when the Nobel Prize for medicine was won for the discovery of this enzyme telomerase. The “aha” moment came a lot quicker after that. We have the only proven product that is commercialized and on the market which activates this enzyme. Since the Nobel Prize was awarded 3 years ago for the discovery of telomerase, the medical importance of controlling telomere length has become mainstream. Doctors see that people suffering from almost all of the diseases associated with aging have shorter telomeres than healthy people. In 2012 Professor Elizabeth Blackburn, who is one of the Nobel Prize winners, published a paper talking about “Telomere Syndrome” diseases. She lists most of the diseases of aging as being fundamentally caused by shortening telomeres. That is how people and doctors are reaching the “aha” moment, but it usually takes some study and thought on their part.

CEOCFO: Is there a reversal of aging or a prevention of aging?

Mr. Patton: On a cellular level, TA-65 can actually reverse the shortening on telomeres by activating the telomerase enzyme. Independent laboratory testing has confirmed that this can help rejuvenate the immune system. We also know, from the Nobel Prize winning research and published research from other scientists unconnected to T.A. Sciences, that shorter telomeres are associated with age-related diseases.

CEOCFO: You mentioned that you need large quantities of the root. Where is it grown and are there particular climates that are better? Are you able to pick and choose where you set up?

Mr. Patton: The root is actually called astragalus. Astragalus is common in Traditional Chinese Medicine; it has been used for literally over two thousand years in China. It is grown commercially in large quantities in China, but TA-65 is only one single rare molecule that is found in that plant.

CEOCFO: Is it very common and easy to find in China? What is the business aspect of getting the root from China?

Mr. Patton: The plant is commonly used and there are tens of thousands of acres growing the plant. It is grown in very inhospitable climates such as Mongolia. Because the molecule is so rare, it takes tons of plant material to make a small amount of TA-65. It would be prohibitively expensive to ship all that bulk to the USA, so we first do an extraction process overseas. We then make the pills in the United States, under GMP, which stands for Good Manufacturing Process. We insist on very strict quality control. I was the first person to take this product, and I have been taking it now for over six years. It has to absolutely conform to top GMP quality standards if I am going to take it myself and allow my friends, loved ones, and family to take it as well. This is something you take over a period of time, so you cannot have any contaminates or impurities in it that might build up over time.

CEOCFO:
How is business and are you funded to continue commercializing the way you would like?

Mr. Patton: I have been lucky in my former business of manufacturing appliances. I was moderately successful there and had some capital available to start this company and to fund it from its inception eleven years ago until when it started to make a profit three years ago. There were more than eight years of losses in this startup company, but we never had any outside shareholders or raised any money. It was all self funded, although it was getting slim toward the end of those eight years and we did not have enough money to do all of the research and things we wanted to do. Now that we are profitable, we have enough money to do the things that we want to do. We are plowing our profits right back in to the business, for example we are in the process of developing a skin cream with the TA-65 molecule that activates telomerase and has the potential to make human skin cells younger. We are also developing a product for pets and horses. In addition, we acquired all of the drug rights to this molecule and are considering submitting TA-65 to the FDA for certain disease states. By reversing telomere loss, there is the potential to prevent or cure several of the diseases associated with aging. We are in the process of doing all these things right now and are very fortunate to not need outside investors for funding.

CEOCFO: Are you able to ramp up production quickly if there is a need for it?

Mr. Patton: Yes, it is a matter of degree. We have upped our production capacity for TA-65 over the last year by tenfold. Right now, we are in a very good position for considerable expansion. For example, if we introduce a skin cream and can prove that it would help make your skin younger, you can imagine how many women and men would want to buy that cream. We would not have the capacity to supply that much immediately, but we would get busy and build it up. We have not introduced that product yet, so we do not have that need right now. Having to significantly increase production would be a good problem.

CEOCFO: What were the most important lessons that you learned from your previous business that you are able to apply here?

Mr. Patton: The most important things are patience and persistence. Owning 0ne’s own business allows you to think ahead and plan long term. If you are a public company, you have outside investors and there is a tremendous pressure for short-term profits, often at the expense of what should be done for the long term good of the company. Having the patience to do things right and stay the course is something that I had learned from my past business because I was also the owner of that company. We had our ups and downs and tough times, and in the tough times you have to persevere and stay in there if you believe in what you are doing.

CEOCFO: Why should people in the business and investment community pay attention to T.A. Sciences?

Mr. Patton: People should pay attention if they are concerned about aging. Just about everybody is, and particularly your readership who are dynamic people: founders, presidents, and key executives of companies. These are hard driving people and they are not the kinds who merely want to be gracefully put into a rocking chair when they turn 65. They want to maintain their mobility, mental acuity, and the things that make life exciting and worth living. For their own health and that of their loved ones, I think your readers would be interested in a product that has the potential to slow down or even reverse the aging process.
