Interview conducted by:

Lynn Fosse, Senior Editor, CEOCFO Magazine, Published – December 28, 2015

CEOCFO: Mr. Kochnev, your IntelliBoard.net site indicates you make every learning management system smarter. How so? What is your service and product?

Mr. Kochnev: IntelliBoard.net is a reporting and analytical tool for education, communities and institutions who use the open source learning management system called Moodle. There are over sixty thousand registered sites using Moodle. There are about more than eight thousand sites in the United States alone and over seventy nine million users use Moodle daily. It means that there is so much data and it is all coming from learning management systems. IntelliBoard.net is a tool that connects to Moodle learning management system and shows data to end user in real time. It is data that is analyzed and presented to instructors, administrators and LMS stake holders in a new way, a visual way, a very smart way.

CEOCFO: Would you give us a couple of examples of the data you can measure; something obvious and something that people would be surprised you could actually measure?

Mr. Kochnev: We know that learners take courses online and they try to do their best, but sometimes they fail. To be there for students on time, identify where and when they fail or need help, provide real time help to at-risk students, that is what IntelliBoard does. We are able to track everything learners do, their results, interaction with other learners or instructors, their at-risk status. We provide this information to instructors, to course administrators and to course organizers so they can make their learning environment and content better. Everything is in real time.

CEOCFO: Are you able to pinpoint where they stated to misunderstand? What can you look at to determine the end result that you are talking about? You said that it is not just scores. What are those subtle points that you can find?

Mr. Kochnev: IntelliBoard is a tool designed to provide reports based on real time data and results. For example, as you just said, in the middle of a course we notice that student is at-risk and going in the wrong direction. With IntelliBoard we provide instructors with this information. We see that learner is failing different activities and instructors are able to contact learner immediately so that we can fix an issue right away, work on the issue together. In many learning management systems activities depend on each other. Therefore, once you finish the first activity you have access to the second one. Based on completions and dependencies we can track what learners are doing. It is not just about showing data in the form of reports. It is also about staying in touch with instructors and administrators in case students are failing or not even active enough in their courses. Therefore, we track how much time leaners spend on their courses; not just courses, but on each individual activity inside the course. It is not just a matter of showing a grade, but what exactly learners are doing, content of the course they are clicking on, when they click links inside the course, how much time they spend on different activities and how much time they spend to analyze and answer questions on the quiz that they take. In case students are failing or not active enough in their courses we show this data to our instructors, so they can interact with students back when needed. That is what IntelliBoard is and how it allows us to track learner’s actions in real time.

CEOCFO: Would this be done in a classroom or are learners working independently or both?

Mr. Kochnev: Both. It is about blended learning. It is about online learning. It is about on site learning. Everything that involves using learning management systems. There are so many ways to start learning today. We work with pure online systems like Moodle. We work with schools who use learning management systems as a tool to provide home work assignments to students online and in class. However, they all track results of what they do in class inside LMS. We are there to support. Our goal is to track everything that is registered in Moodle learning management system.

CEOCFO: Have teachers been looking for help or is it common to use some form of help now?

Mr. Kochnev: With the introduction of the online learning management system everyone started creating courses. Everyone started to use Learning Management System as a tool to deliver content to students; students of different levels such as college, high school, even elementary schools and that has happened within the last ten years. For the last ten years we have been delivering content to our learners and in the last two years everyone started thinking, “Okay, we got the content out there and we know what students are supposed to do. How about results? How can we track and show all of this data?” That is when the concept came in. That is when we actually started thinking about the idea of bringing reports; and not just reports, but the visual implementation of the data into life. It is an ongoing process. The reporting idea, the tool, was always there. However, the way that we present data has evolved through all of these years.

CEOCFO: How do you reach potential customers?

Mr. Kochnev: From the very beginning we were pretty active in the Moodle community. IntelliBoard plugin is a registered plugin at Moodle Plugin Repository and everyone can download it for free. We offer subscriptions which include premium payment plans but we also offer free options, including free trial for everyone. We have our team of sales people who communicate with customers daily, tech support team who help our subscribers. Today, we also partner with number of Moodle Partners like Moonami, Elearning Experts, and others to share our tool with others.

CEOCFO: About how much is in education and how much is in enterprise?

Mr. Kochnev: If you are talking about education which includes high schools, elementary schools, universities and colleges, I would say it is seventy percent of our customer’s base and another thirty percent is enterprise.

CEOCFO: Do you see the mix changing? Do you see enterprise more active in this arena?

Mr. Kochnev: Yes and it also depends on how we position our tool. Our original idea was to focus on helping instructors, course organizers and course management to not just maintain the content, but actually make the content more interesting to learners. We focused on higher education, primary education and continuing education centers. Now that we know that a lot of companies and businesses use Moodle as a tool to deliver learning content to their learners we started building reports that oriented towards them. We build reports to fit both industries. Every single report is prebuilt as customized with ability for subscribers to adjust reports on the fly. We try not to give them boundaries. Our goal is to actually fit every single subscriber that we have.

CEOCFO: Would you tell us about user friendliness? How do you insure that?

Mr. Kochnev: That is actually a very good question. User friendliness is more about interface; how it looks, what it does and how quick it is. We show data in real time. We do not copy any of the user data to our servers. Everything is real time data processed on our customers servers only. That is our rule number one and that requires us to provide an interface where all information is available on one screen. How user friendly? All of our reports are pretty much built with an idea to click and view. There is no need to code anything once subscribed. We allow to connect to IntelliBoard.net via Google or Linked account. Takes about 5 minutes to connect and start view data coming from Learning Management System. All of our reports support export to PDF, XLS and CSV formats. More than that, we do not just offer this data. We offer you to actually share your data with others if you need it, well, in case you need to share it with colleagues. With click and view functionality we offer reports on the screen to be emailed or printed instantly. Even more, we will provide reports via email on individual schedule.

CEOCFO: Do people come to you through general search? What would they look for?

Mr. Kochnev: We do track that as well. We have a system that tracks who is coming, where they are coming from and what they actually search for. Many of our visitors look for reports and look for analytics in Moodle or they look for LMS analytics. As soon as you start typing reports and analytics in Moodle we are right there on the first page.

CEOCFO: What is the competitive landscape?

Mr. Kochnev: Number one; we love to have competition. I strongly believe that competition is what is needed in every single line of business. It just makes product better. We do have competitors. Also, we do have competitors in a different way. For example, we are talking about analytics, which is providing data. There are some major players in this fields with great tools that shows all the data coming from website. However, because it is Moodle learning management system, there are some additional rules that apply. Our approach is to look into every single learner, instructor, course, activity, and analyze the data coming from this interaction. There are other companies who build their own tools to show reports based on Moodle’s data. They do a great job. We do actually talk to them a lot and we try to learn from each other as well; not to copy, but more to learn from each other. We do meet with them at different events and this is actually a great way to make our own product better.

CEOCFO: How is business these days?

Mr. Kochnev: It is going very well! When we started we knew it was a startup. We knew that there will be challenges. In the last few months we introduced new features that really took reporting to a new level; not just reporting inside Moodle, but reporting inside any.

CEOCFO: What is ahead for Intelliboard?

Mr. Kochnev: A lot! We do not just stop at what we already have. We are a team of managers, educators, and developers working together. Our goal is to make Moodle and other LMSs in the future, smarter and intellectual where best content, results and data can be tracked, analyzed and shown. In the beginning of the next year we are planning to release new features for IntelliBoard.net, which will include direct interaction with students through our recommendation tool. We will be providing recommendations to students on what to do next; what is the next course to take based on their current. We are building our concept to provide access to predictive analytics. We are not going to just tell what happened. We are going to tell our customers what may happen if they go one of the ways. We are also partnering with several industry leaders to provide better reporting tool and integration between Student Information Systems and Learning Management Systems.

CEOCFO: Why choose IntelliBoard?

Mr. Kochnev: That is a very good question. I was kind of thinking about it. I was reading about other interviews that you have had; why use it. IntelliBoard is not just a tool. It is not just a business. Our business model is subscriptions. We partner with different companies to bring IntelliBoard to their communities. We offer unlimited access to data hidden in LMS. We bring new features every month and we try to bring only what is actually requested by teachers, instructors and everyone who is involved the learning process. We also deliver information to students. We do believe in supporting our communities, so we do a lot of interaction in this community. We love what we do. Each and every team member is there to make a difference. It is a startup, and I believe in small companies where we can make a difference. We all want to make it as easy as possible to track and analyze the learning process, so we work really hard. We are very fun, but we are very committed at the same time. We also believe in our subscribers, so we always listen to what our subscribers ask for. We do not just listen. We actually take what they say and we bring it into IntelliBoard. Half of the reports that we already have at IntelliBoard.net, we built based on our subscribers feedback. We actually send messages out and ask, “What do you want? What else can help you make your work better?”
