Interview conducted by:

Lynn Fosse, Senior Editor, CEOCFO Magazine, Published – March 9, 2015

CEOCFO: Mr. Guilford, your website indicates that Asterion Multimedia is an innovative solution to protect valuable media assets. How so?

Mr. Guilford: Presently, all multimedia assets need to be stored as a file in the file system. That is a glaring weakness in terms of asset security. All one has to do is to break into your file system and copy your assets onto a USB drive, send them somewhere else; basically do what they want with them. Obviously that is a big problem and it’s one our technology addresses. Asterion is able to store all of that multimedia data deep within a database so you do not see a file name anymore. If somebody were able to break into your system and scan your hard drives looking for files, they would not see any of your critical multimedia assets. The Asterion Multimedia framework allows all of the programs that we use to manipulate multimedia data, like video editors, to operate upon the data as if it were still in a file. It removes multiple “vectors” for potential hackers.

CEOCFO: What is the state of the industry today?

Mr. Guilford: It is rather disjointed. There are various technologies for protecting media assets in-situ. You can encrypt media and enforce access privileges. But those solutions are disjointed and not well integrated together. Companies have a hard time working with these solutions. What Asterion Multimedia is able to do is leverage the unifying framework of the Oracle database to simplify and compartmentalize security aspects that need to be in place to protect multimedia assets.

CEOCFO: Asterion Multimedia was formed in 2014 to focus on multimedia. Where are you today?

Mr. Guilford: Asterion is closely affiliated with another company, Database Plugins. Database Plugins has created four patent-pending technologies that have broad applicability in many different market areas. Asterion applies Database Plugins' technology in the multimedia space. Our multimedia framework has been in development for the past two and a half years and is now mature, thoroughly tested and ready for additional market acceptance and exposure.

CEOCFO: What is the plan and the strategy to introduce Asterion?

Mr. Guilford:  We’re looking for the companies for whom the benefits of the Asterion Multimedia Framework are most apparent. Because this is a new and innovative solution we are looking for a partner that understands the vision and wants to explore its potential. Some of the obvious beneficiaries of the Asterion Multimedia Framework are studios and post-production houses. But there is a growing demand at the corporate level, outside of the traditional media space, for the protection, organization and monetization of multimedia assets.

One of the most striking features of the Asterion Multimedia Framework is the ease and simplicity with which it can be applied to existing applications. Proof-of-concept integrations can be accomplished in a matter of days and full implementation realized within a few months. This makes the framework an attractive integration candidate to existing multimedia application vendors that need to provide an increased level of asset security.

CEOCFO: Are you encouraged by all of the security breaches of late?

Mr. Guilford: I don't know that encouraged is the right way to put it but, yes, the Sony breach came at an opportune time. It certainly focused attention upon the pervasive threat that all corporations face, not to mention the glaring inadequacies when it comes to software, network and data security. After the Sony breach, there was Anthem Blue Cross and then it was revealed that several major banks had their ATM networks hacked – an intrusion that has been ongoing for a couple of years. (link provided for reference: http://www.nytimes.com/2015/02/15/world/bank-hackers-steal-millions-via-malware.html?_r=0) Clearly, network and systems security development has lagged behind – almost to a tragic level.

The implications for what Asterion is able to do serve as a means of demonstrating the applicability and market impact of the underlying technologies from Database Plugins. Specifically, what we are able to do is make the database smarter allowing it to incorporate logic that it previously could not. This means you can take logic from an inherently insecure environment and move it down to one that is more cohesive, ubiquitous, thorough and easier to secure.

Another key technology is the ability to store files directly in a database and restrict how applications can gain access to those files with a novel, new mechanism. By storing the files in the database, we no longer have to maintain a static filename and can use the filename to convey dynamic security information.

CEOCFO: If you are in front of technical people, will they understand this easily?

Mr. Guilford: Understanding the deeper implications does require some insight into how applications and systems are built. We have found that the ones that get it, get it right away and understand the implications.

At a top level, the Asterion Multimedia Framework makes the Oracle database smarter, enhancing its ability to secure and manipulate multimedia data. We also have eliminated the need for the typical file system – thus removing the security risk associated with file-based viruses, maleware and theft.

A lower level explanation of the framework highlights its ability to store, stream, transcode, apply workflow rules, edit and render multimedia content to-and-from an Oracle database, securely, without having to rely upon physical files. While a mouthful, that statement, to a technologist, should ring home.

CEOCFO: Why is this the time?

Mr. Guilford: Events of late have shown the glaring inadequacies in systems, data and application security. Asterion Multimedia and Database Plugins present new paradigms that address two of technology's Achilles Heels: the separation of business logic from data and the reliance upon physical file-systems that are difficult to secure.

CEOCFO: Do you have the funding for the next steps?

Mr. Guilford: Yes, Asterion Multimedia is funded for the next steps.

CEOCFO: Why pay attention to Asterion Multimedia today?

Mr. Guilford: That answer is two-fold.

First, the Asterion Multimedia Framework brings about a new state-of-the-art as it pertains to the design and implementation of multimedia applications. We intend to use this strength to build a unified, local and distributed, cloud based multimedia architecture that features both proprietary and open-source tools. Asterion has integrated Kdenlive, the leading open-source video editor into the framework. The patterns and techniques devised to achieve this integration can be easily and quickly applied to other programs. By combining these qualities with the data storage and management capabilities of the Oracle Database, Asterion is uniquely positioned to bring about a new standard in the multimedia marketplace.

Second, once the power and flexibility of the Asterion Multimedia Framework is realized, the logical question will be “where else can these techniques be utilized?” The answer to that is “throughout the spectrum of corporate data-processing systems”.
